Design
As an entry-level smartphone, the ZTE Avid 589 has a typical build like other smartphones in their class. The phone dimension is 142.2 x 70.9 x 7.9 mm with weights of 167g. This measurement makes the phone feel bulky and thicker. However, you can still put the phone in your pocket perfectly.
The front side features an LCD screen and is surrounded by bezels, but the left and right bezels are thinner than the other part. A camera is embedded on the left top, and a speaker is in the center. The camera placement is quite awkward since we rarely find a front camera in this location.
Meanwhile, on the backside, you will see a single rear camera with an LED flash at the bottom. These two are placed in a box vertically. The phone’s case has textures that give extra grip to the phone.

Display
The ZTE Avid 589 comprises a 5.5-inch display screen with a 77.4% screen-to-body ratio. In our opinion, the display screen is quite reliable for users to experience the phone’s journey.
This phone consists of 1440 x 720 pixels for screen resolution, which is fairly good for users. With this capability, users can still enjoy vibrant colors. Although, the quality is still far from the AMOLED display quality.
Honestly, you won’t get an immersive experience like other middle-level smartphones. You will see some glitches when watching movies and gaming, but the icons and texts are still readable.
Camera
The ZTE Avid 589 camera also doesn’t fulfill our expectations. Especially if you are social media savvy. For social media, the camera doesn’t give you the best outputs. The first camera is only a single 8MP rear camera. However, this rear camera has 4x digital zoom to help you capture a picture closely.
At the front, the ZTE Avid 589 features a 2MP selfie camera. We’re not satisfied by these megapixels since today, people are often taking selfies or video meetings. You won’t get bright and clear outputs by these specifications. Other than that, you can capture a 720p video and playback.
Storage
The ZTE Avid 589 has 32GB of internal storage, which isn’t too wide for smartphones. For worse, you can only enjoy around half of the total storage. It isn’t convenient for users to save more files on the phone. However, we think the storage space is pretty common for an entry-level smartphone.
Luckily, you can save more files and download more apps with expandable storage. The ZTE Avid 589 allows users to install MicroSD up to 512GB as the external storage into the phone. The card comes separately, so you must pay extra cash to buy it yourself.

Performance
Performance-wise, the ZTE Avid 589 has decent specifications, especially for an affordable smartphone. This phone relies on the 1.8GHz Octa-core MediaTek Helio MT6762D to run the phone. This chipset is a bare minimum you can find in almost entry-level smartphones.
We understand that this phone chooses to optimize its power efficiency over high performance with these specs. However, we found no problem when accessing light applications.
The CPU is combined with 2GB of RAM. Even though 2GB RAM is not the standard of today’s smartphones. But for an entry-level smartphone, we are still glad to see this capacity because we often find the competitors at the same level with lower RAM.
Unfortunately, this combination is still far from perfect–not even close. Users can’t multitask or run some apps simultaneously. If the RAM is not free enough, the ZTE Avid 589 smartphone will start showing lags and run slowly. The phone will also be hard to respond to any operations you made.
As an entry-level smartphone, this device uses the Android 11 Go Edition as its operating system. You can find several differences in this Go Edition. For example, some of the Android gimmick features are not available. This OS only provided the essential features of the device.
To make it worse, the user interface of this Android 11 Go Edition also comes much simpler. As an affordable smartphone, the ZTE Avid 589 performance must be as light as possible.
The sensor aspects are also one of the drawbacks. The only sensors available on the phone are the accelerometer, proximity, and light sensors. We couldn’t find any security sensors such as fingerprint readers and face recognition.
Connectivity
The ZTE Avid 589 accommodates 4G technology and older bands for accessing the internet and calls. Even though this phone doesn’t provide 5G connectivity, the 4G is still reliable worldwide. With this phone, you can also turn your phone into a mobile hotspot and connect up to 10 devices.
Another connectivity available is Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth. Bluetooth transfers the files wirelessly and connects to external devices.
You can rely on a USB Type-C cable if you want to connect your phone to a computer. Unfortunately, the ZTE Avid 589 doesn’t have the NFC connectivity features.
Battery
The ZTE Avid 589 stays on with a 3,000mAh battery capacity. This capacity doesn’t impress us, especially if you’re compared to most of today’s smartphones. However, ZTE claims they can provide 18 hours of talk time on a single charge. The battery life cycle depends on users’ performance and digital behavior.
For battery type, the ZTE Avid 589 uses a removable one – which is very outdated and inconvenient, in our opinion. Despite this, this battery type can be useful if it’s broken or gets drained. The removable one is very hard to find in the market nowadays.
Is the ZTE Avid 589 a good phone?
To answer the question above, it depends on your point of view. If you’re looking for an affordable smartphone with standard specifications – which can’t do much of anything other than communicate, it would be perfect for you. But, if you’re into a smartphone with advanced technology, this is a no.
Some people would be interested in the $60 price. And, it’s kinda a good deal. To close this ZTE Avid 589 review, we recommend you take this phone if you’re not paying much attention to the technology.
